A collection of notes by junior scientists, Parkinson’s-dancers and choreographers scribbled by the participants during the dance class lead by Matan Zamir & Nicola Mascia (matanicola) on May 20th, 2015 in Freiburg.

Physical research task:
Gather in mixed groups of four people.
One person is in the center, one behind, one at each side.
The person in the center starts a personal movement exploration in space with closed eyes. The other participants take the roles of “helpers”, protecting, following, guiding, supporting and later on actively manipulating the journey of the center person.
Throughout the entire physical travel, the “helpers” have to constantly be aware and embody the individual and unique movement quality of the person in the center.
After the travel has been established and explored, how do we exchange and embody the new center without the necessity of verbal communication and in the most organic way possible?

Wie überträgt sich die Bewegungsqualität der Manipulierenden? Zittern der Hände …
(How do the movement qualities of the manipulators transmit? Trembling of the hands…)

The feeling of apprehension – not wanting to overwhelm the Parkinson’s dancer with my weight?

Lots of physical input at the same time → can be overwhelming, but if you let yourself „fall“ into the experience it can be very rewarding.

Learning by feeling.

The less a person gives weight, the more difficult it is to support them.

How does the body naturally adapt when there’s a specific urgency – instant adaptation of the body.

Wäre ich immer in der Mitte! Im Leben bin ich Außen! Um denen, die in der Mitte sich aufhalten, zu helfen! (If I were ever in the middle! In life, I am outside! To help those who are staying in the middle!)

Mich erinnert das Ganze an ein soziales Fangnetz.
(The whole thing reminds me of a social safety net.)

How to find the quality of somebody else? Give into them!! You make everyone smile at each other by having a great time and by looking into each other eyes.


Überwindung der physischen Schwere. Die Schwerkraft ein Antagonist von Freiheit? Zuviel Muskelkraft macht einen schwer – unfreier; wird einem geholfen, wird einem die Schwere genommen, man fühlt sich leichter, freier? → sie helfen bei der Überwindung der physischen Schwere. Gravitation. Was heißt es, sich physisch fallen zu lassen? Als Helfender wird einem nicht leichter, aber man wird liebender – also auf eine andere Weise leichter?
(Overcoming the physical severity. Gravity as an antagonist to freedom? Too much muscle strength makes it heavy – not-free ; is one is supported, one feels lighter, more free? → they help to overcome the physical severity. Gravitation. What does it mean to physically fall? As the helper one is not as light, but more loving – so it’s a different kind of lightness?)

Rücksicht und Hilfe. (Consideration and help.)

Fear vs. release, what blocks us, what frees us.

Desire to help sometimes blocks.

Hätte doch der Mensch Flügel … Die Anderen sind die Flügel … vielleicht … in der Übung; physische Körperflügel. (If man would have wings … the others are the wings … perhaps … in the exercise; physical body wings.)

How can we free our own body to assist another?

How can we time & transition without stopping or talking?

Eye closed lights a fire.

How do we really discover another’s body? Touch? Eyes? Matching our center? Rhythms? How do we open the space to others or block it? (even if unintentional)

Switching between listening & doing – how to do both?

Can we recognize from the outside who is the center or not?

Wo ist die ,,MITTE“? Wer steht im Mittelpunkt? (Who is in the middle? Who is the focus?)

It’s most interesting when it’s not clear who is what!!

Ich habe viel dazu gelernt. (I have learned a lot.)

It seems easy to include an inhomogeneous group by letting people act themselves and having other act on them.

Great that you managed to bring everybody together without anyone feeling in the wrong place or restricted.

How does freedom apply when we have complete trust? Or when we have some doubt … Embodying quality and gaining knowledge …

Does „disorder“ exist in dance?

I think I understood today so much about how to work together with differences, how to get inspired, how to ah, ah, ah – GIVE INTO IT.

Mit geschlossenen Augen auf Bewegung der Anderen einzugehen und zu vertrauen ist ein großartiges Erlebnis. (Responding to the movement of the other while having the eyes closed and to trust is a great experience.)

Und wenn man es schafft, drauf einzugehen, macht es süchtig.
(And if you manage to give into it, it’s addictive.)

What does the movement quality tell about a person / identity? How does the movement quality change, when someone is observing you?

Acknowledging, breathing, accepting, extending.
